Bedroom Window Bat

To be honest, these past few months have been difficult in my spirit. Everything around me looks to be getting back on track after the pandemic, but there is a sense of unrest in the atmosphere… different from the unrest felt when the country was shutting down, riots were breaking out on the streets across the nation, and people were tragically passing away all around the world. Those were all unrests easily seen in the natural, even if we questioned why they were happening. No, no, this unrest is spiritual.

Two nights ago, on July 13th, I noticed a little bat swooping back and forth in front of my bedroom window. I could barely make out his silhouette against the ever-fading light of the setting sun. He was obviously eating, and then I realized he was eating the bugs being drawn to my window by my lamp light. What a clever little fellow this bat was. Beautifully designed by our Lord to collect as many mosquitoes he can bear to eat, and the smarts to find the best possible way in doing so… by finding the light! And yes, I could dig deeper into this metaphor, but for time’s sake…

As I continued to watch him, a thought crossed my mind. My lamp was not so bright that it was revealing every single insect he was eating, and in all actuality, the bat probably wasn’t even utilizing the light of the lamp. He was using his echolocation. He was sending out a sound, his voice, and trusting that the messages he received back were going to point him in the right direction, no questions asked. Think about that! Bats fly, swoop, and land all by simply trusting the messages they are receiving back to their ears.

Then I asked myself, how can I be more like this little bat? What if I trust the messages God sends me after I pray? What if I trust that an unanswered prayer, is really a message to wait? Afterall, the Lord has given each of us a calling for His kingdom, and we have to be ready to listen and trust the messages He gives us so we can move according to His plans. He even gave the bat a very important job, especially this summer here in Michigan, to seek and destroy the evil mosquitoes who sneakily take what they want before going on their way.

In closing, I believe this is a time to truly seek the Lord. To quiet hearts and minds and listen for that still, small voice to send a message to our spirits. It is an intense and wonderful time to be alive, but it is also a serious and pivotal time. I pray that each person who reads this will find a space and place to confide in the Lord, and to listen to what He has to say.

God bless, Roxie
